Creative work
I am an exhibited illustrative photographer and published writer with experience in short film production and direction. I have recently included printmaking techniques in my creative practice which focuses on the detail of everyday life, presenting intersectional moments in space.
After Lluci, 137 Stanzas … a novella
After Lluci, 137 Stanzas tastes the random observations, recollections and encounters of the photographer Lluci Swan as she travels from Australia to the emerging ‘new Europe’ of 1994, from a life wanting change to one that creates it. Touching Edinburgh to settle in, Lluci’s journey edges stories into which she steps. London greets her like the first rush of love, and a halting fluidity with herself and the world begins. A publisher’s rejection of her photographic work affirms Lluci’s difference, and a chance encounter in an elsewhere place propels her sense of hope – might someone think her work real? From a mood determined to one quieter, Lluci senses another self approaching, making connections in virtual ways. Like the differing shades of the cities she visits, the passions of centuries persuade her to think again about places and people, as well as herself. After the strange and familiar byways of Scotland, England and Wales come the new intensities of France, for Paris is where re-imaginings begin to form. The city is alive with detail. Shadows emerge from the remnants of matter, and Lluci begins the imperfect process of transformation. By way of cities in Southern France she travels to Italy, craving her customary solitude, the ‘riot of silence and the mayhem of the still.’ But on arrival in Milan, Lluci falls, tripping into the eyes of another. Unprepared and surprised, alteration grabs her in ways and shapes only Lluci can see. Through Venice to Florence and elsewhere on the continent, it is finally in Zurich that change born of loss is solidified. Lluci negotiates the spirit of this Other, and goes on to secure the most enduring fluidity of all.
